AHA, BHA and PHA, the skincare acids that people are raving about! Skincare acids have great exfoliating properties and tackle a number of skin issues effectively.
Thinking about trying out skincare acids for the first time? It may seem intimidating, but the key is to find out which acids works best for your skin type. Keep reading as we will discuss the benefits of AHA, BHA and PHA.

AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid)
AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid, which is a group of natural chemical compounds. AHA’s are mainly used to target skin conditions such as dry skin, ageing skin and or acne. This type of skincare acid gently peels away the surface of your skin. The purpose of this is to encourage new, more evenly pigmented skin cells to generate.
When applying an AHA lotion or solution to your skin you may feel a tingling sensation. This is the product working its magic on the targeted area.
AHA Benefits
- Exfoliates
- Brightens your skin
- Promotes Collagen production
- Reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles
- Promotes blood flow to skin
- Minimises and corrects discolouration
- Treats and prevents acne
- Increases product absorption

BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
BHA stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid. Mainly used in cleansers and exfoliators to treat clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, acne and cysts.
The difference between BHA and AHA is the BHA is soluble. It is generally targeted to be used by people with oily skin. BHA dissolves your skins natural oils and enters your pores to deeply clean them. So, these types of acids are perfect for people with acne prone or blackhead prone skin.
PHA (Poly Hydroxy Acid)
PHA stands for Poly Hydroxy Acid. Very similar to AHA as they both break down dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.
The benefits of using PHAs are for those who prefer skincare acids that are gentler on your skin. Instead of penetrating into the skins surface, they work their magic on the skins surface.
If you’ve experimented with AHA and BHA skincare acids and have found them too strong, opt for a PHAs. If you have sensitive skin then PHA skincare products help to decrease sensitivity whilst increasing moisture of your skin.
Acids and the Sun
Certainly, using skincare acids can potentially make your skin vulnerable to sun sensitivity. However, when your skin is exposed to sun, it is advised to wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Ensure to reapply a generous amount of sunscreen to your skin every two hours and you can rest assured that you will be protected.
If you have fair skin, it’s best to stay in the shade and wear a hat. Ensure to also religiously reapplying sunscreen with a high SPF. SPF 30 is always recommended however; we would advise to go with a sunscreen with a higher SPF.
Regardless of your skin type, you should be careful when your skin is exposed to sunlight for extended periods.

Can I combine AHA and PHA?
Absolutely! You will notice that many skincare acids contain a mixture of AHA and PHA. As long as the cocktail of acids is coming from the same product then it’s fine. If you have a particular skin condition or are unsure, it’s always best to consult with a skincare therapist.
Remember to always perform a patch test when using skincare acids for the first time. This is to rule out any potential reactions or skin irritation that the acid may cause.
